About the job
We’re looking for a Senior Video Editor for Strange Parts (1.96M subscribers), a YouTube channel producing edutainment for adults focused on technology and manufacturing. Our videos are factory tours, teardowns, and build stories, shot documentary-style on location.
You will lead editing across our three channels, working alongside the host for story and creative direction, and be responsible for taking videos from raw footage to finished product, usually based on a rough story outline. We require Adobe Premiere for all projects, as multiple editors may end up touching a project over its lifetime.
You will be joining an existing editing team and following workflows that have been running for years. We are looking for someone with strong opinions about what makes YouTube storytelling work, earned from videos that actually performed, who can bring those ideas to the edit while still working inside how we already do things.
Responsibilities
- Leading video editing across our YouTube channels (Strange Parts, Electric Ranch, Stranger Parts)
- Setting and maintaining quality standards for all edited content
- Coordinating with and providing feedback to other editors on the team
- Managing editing timelines and post-production workflows
- Collaborating with Scotty on creative direction and storytelling
- Supporting the growth and development of other editors
Must haves
- 5+ years professional editing experience, at least 3 of them editing for YouTube
- Available full-time, and able to make Strange Parts your only editing work. We are not looking for someone fitting us in around other clients or channels
- Significant experience working as part of an editing team, not solo freelance only
- Experience editing across multiple YouTube channels
- Proven experience editing documentary and/or reality formats, with a portfolio to back it up
- Strong storytelling and narrative abilities, and a point of view on what makes a YouTube video hold an audience that is backed by results. Be ready to point to videos you cut and how they actually did – retention, watch time, or views
- Professional portfolio showing storytelling/documentary work. Build videos, factory tours, and similar formats are what we want to see
- 3+ years editing on Adobe Premiere
- Fast learner, self directed
- Ability to operate under pressure and meet tight deadlines, and to flag early when a deadline is at risk
- Real overlap with our US-based team: you are in a time zone between UTC-10 (Hawaii) and UTC+3 (Eastern Europe), and responsive during your working hours. That covers the Americas, the UK, Europe, and Africa. We are not able to hire in South Asia, East Asia, or Oceania for this role.
- Willing to work as part of a team and follow preexisting workflows
- Willing to conform to an existing editing style and to receive and incorporate detailed notes and feedback
- A fast internet connection and fast editing workstation with ample storage. Source footage is typically 150mbit 4k, and projects can be 2+ TB of raw footage
Preferred experience
- Experience, interest, or passion for technology, making, engineering, and manufacturing
- Editing with a focus on storytelling and viewer retention
- Color correcting LOG video formats
- Audio leveling and mastering
- Editing short form video for social media
Not a fit
- Editors whose experience is mostly TV or film rather than YouTube
- Portfolios built mainly on gameplay footage or static talking-head content
- Anyone looking for one-off project work only. This is a path to a staff role
- Editors keeping a roster of other clients or channels. Once you are on, this is full-time and it is the only editing work you take on
Logistics
- Location: Remote, in a time zone from UTC-10 (Hawaii) through UTC+3 (Eastern Europe). Not open to South Asia, East Asia, or Oceania
- Hours: Full-time, and exclusive once the ongoing role starts
- Start: ASAP
- Software: Adobe Premiere (required). We provide software; you provide your own computer hardware
- Formats: Long-form and short-form
- Language: English
How this works
This role is project-to-hire.
Step one is a paid test edit. You will edit one real video for the channel, start to finish, paid hourly. You get the raw footage, a rough plot outline, and the same workflow and feedback cycles our editors use. It is real work, it ships, and you are paid for it.
If it goes well, this becomes an ongoing role. For editors authorized to work in the US, that means coming on as a W-2 employee with benefits. For editors outside the US, it means an ongoing contract, and we will get as close to the same deal as we practically can.
Either way, we are not looking for a one-off freelancer, and we are not looking for someone who will run this alongside other gigs. The ongoing role is full-time and exclusive. The test edit exists so both sides can find out whether this is a good long-term fit before committing to one.
Compensation and benefits
Test edit: paid hourly.
Ongoing role, US-authorized (W-2 employee):
- $40/hr
- Health insurance coverage
- 20 days paid time off per year
- Paid holidays
- $1,000 per year equipment upgrade allowance
Ongoing role, outside the US: ongoing contract at $40/hr, with as close to the same arrangement as we can practically provide.
How to apply
